WAXY STEMS OR BARK

The outside of a green leaf or stem is covered with a layer of cells called the epidermis. The cells of this outer layer make a waxy substance, which acts as a smooth, waterproof coating for the plant. In herbaceous, nonwoody stems, this coating allows the stem to fill up with water and makes it stiff and upright. The epidermis consists mainly of parenchyma (packing tissue) and collenchyma (supporting tissue).
